Texas Tech recently issued a joint statement from university president Lawrence Schovanec and athletic director Kirby Hocutt regarding the official release of quarterback Brendan Sorsby. The 22-year-old signal-caller is shifting his focus away from college football to apply for the NFL Supplemental Draft after facing a significant legal issue with the NCAA concerning his eligibility.
Sorsby, who entered a rehabilitation facility earlier this spring, was ruled ineligible after an investigation revealed that he had a serious sports gambling addiction, involving over $90,000 in total wagers, including bets placed on his own team. Despite this challenging situation, the Texas Tech administration emphasized that student health is their top priority and committed to providing Sorsby with transitional resources.
With his college career officially over, Sorsby is quickly turning his attention to the professional ranks in hopes of salvaging his football future. According to an update from Pete Thamel, a crucial scouting window has already been arranged to assist Sorsby’s transition.
Thamel reported that a Pro Day for Sorsby is tentatively scheduled for July 10. This individual workout will take place at Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, giving NFL front offices and talent evaluators a clear opportunity to assess his physical conditioning, arm strength, and throwing mechanics in a structured environment before the draft selection process.
However, securing a roster spot will still require navigating a highly unpredictable path, as the NFL has officially declined to comment on Sorsby’s pending application. Thamel noted that the league does not currently have a Supplemental Draft scheduled for the summer, although this isn’t unusual for the organization.
The NFL has not selected a player through the supplemental phase since 2019, when the Arizona Cardinals drafted defensive back Jalen Thompson in the fifth round.
