The search in New Orleans is finally over.
The New Orleans Saints have been the last coaching destination remaining since January 25th, and it has been an up-and-down process. Throughout the search, coaches have dropped out, and the Saints seemed to be backed into a corner with only three more candidates left: New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. The favorite of the three has been Moore, but because the Eagles were in the Super Bowl, the Saints had to wait until after February 10th to name him the next head coach.
Well, that day is here, as Kellen Moore is finalizing a deal to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, per Tom Pelissero.
With this hire, the franchise will officially entering into a new, fresh era. 36-year-old Kellen Moore is the youngest head coach in Saints history, the last being Sean Payton at 42. Moore played QB in the NFL from 2012-2017, later joining the Cowboys coaching staff in 2018 as a QBs coach. Moore never looked back and became the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator in 2018. After mutually parting ways with Dallas, Moore became the Chargers’ offensive coordinator in 2023. Although the offense had some success, the defense, head coach, and injuries were too much to overcome, and the whole staff was fired going into the 2024 offseason. This was when the Eagles hired Moore.
Philadelphia had a messy year offensively in 2023/24, but the offense took shape with the addition of Saquon Barkley and Kellen Moore. Fresh off a Super Bowl win, most people attribute the Eagles' offensive success to Barkley’s arrival, but Moore puts his players in advantageous situations and understands what they can or can’t do. For his whole coaching career, Moore has been considered a fantastic offensive mind who is bound to be a future NFL head coach.
The Saints may have ended this process with less choices in who they could hire, but that should not detract from how good of a head coach Kellen Moore could be. This is an extremely risky hire, but Moore is bringing in a fresh offense and leading the team into a new era of football in New Orleans.
