Assistant general manager is out after three seasons with the Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders are parting ways with assistant general manager Champ Kelly, according to The Athleic’s Tashan Reed.
This news comes after Kelly interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ vacant general manager job last week. However, the Jaguars released their finalists for the position and Kelly was not included.
Originally brought on as assistant general manager by Dave Ziegler in 2022, Kelly had been with the Raiders for three seasons and served as the interim general manager in 2023 when Zielger and then-head coach Josh McDaniels were fired midseason.
During the following offseason, Kelly was under consideration for the general manager job in Las Vegas but the position ended up going to Tom Telesco. However, Telesco kept Kelly in the front office in his original role as assistant GM. But with Telesco’s dismissal earlier this offseason, new general manager John Spytek won’t be doing the same.
For the Raiders, this will be another significant change to the front office as Spytek forms his own staff, including hiring a new assistant general manager. The club also has a new head coach with Pete Carroll recently getting the job after Antonio Pierce’s firing and, not to be forgotten, is new minority owner Tom Brady who has played a significant hand in forming the organization’s new regime.
Meanwhile, Kelly will be looking for a new club to land with. He shouldn’t have too much trouble though as he’s well-respected in the NFL and has received several interviews for general manager positions recently, according to Reed.
Kelly spent eight years (2007 to 2014) with the Denver Broncos in various scouting and player personnel roles. He also served as the Chicago Bears’ director of pro scouting in 2015 and 2016 before becoming the Bears’ assistant director of player personnel from 2017 to 2021, the position he held before joining the Raiders.
