BREAKING: Dallas Cowboys fire defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus

The Dallas Cowboys wrapped up their 2025 season on Sunday against the New York Giants and it did not take them long to take a serious step towards next season. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has been fired.

Unfortunately this move comes as no surprise as the Cowboys have fielded one of the worst defenses in franchise history across this season. Arguments can certainly be made about how the team trading away its best player a week before the season began made things inordinately difficult, but Eberflus had an entire season to figure things out and never did.

Eberflus had a history with the Cowboys upon his hiring, and some sold it as a way to help Brian Schottenheimer ease into being a head coach for the first time. Whatever the intent behind the move was from the front office, it goes without saying that it was a disaster.

Much has been made about how Eberflus was the third coordinator that the Cowboys defense had in as many seasons. Following Dan Quinn’s departure after 2023, the Cowboys left Mike McCarthy in a contract year which created a weird situation for any would-be defensive coordinator. Mike Zimmer took the job, but then the Schottenheimer regime began and here we are.

The overall point here is that the Cowboys need to make a commitment and a serious one to the defensive side of the ball and its leadership.
