Brandon Staley’s defenses never ranked higher than 20th in total yards or points allowed during his three seasons with the Chargers.

Following the official hire of Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as the new head coach of the Saints, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that former head Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is a “leading candidate” to become New Orleans’ next defensive coordinator. Moore and Staley’s relationship obviously extended back to the Chargers where the latter hired the former to be his offensive coordinator during the 2023 season.

In three seasons as head coach of the Chargers, Brandon Staley’s defenses never ranked above 20th in either total defense or points allowed. In those categories, from 2021-2023, his units ranked 23rd, 20th, and 28th in total defense and 29th, 21st, and 24th in points allowed, respectively.

In his lone year with the San Francisco 49ers, the defense ranked 29th in points allowed which was a far cry from where they ranked in the previous three seasons. From 2021-2023, the Niners were 9th, 1st, and 3rd in those seasons, respectively.

It has not been a great stretch for Staley’s defenses ever since he led the Rams to the No. 1 scoring unit in 2020, but maybe a fresh start in New Orleans back as a coordinator will have him in his rightful role with a NFL team.
