The Kansas City Chiefs became the first team in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl for the fifth time in six years on Sunday. Kansas City will now look to do another thing that no team in the NFL has ever done: win three consecutive Lombardi Trophies.

And while that’s great news for fans of the Chiefs, it might not be quite as good news for the NFL. League-wide, fans have been to tire of Kansas City and its superstars, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. They’ve also grown dubious of NFL referees and the Chiefs seemingly benefit from repeated calls going in their favor in big spots.

What has that led to? Well, if you believe a segment of fans on Twitter, the answer is “apathy.” The phrase #BoycottSuperbowl began trending on the site late Sunday night and continued in the morning, with almost every tweet complaining about either Kansas City of referees.

“#BoycottSuperbowl Seriously don’t watch the game. Let their ratings suffer. This must stop. When they get crushed in viewership then they’ll f—ing stop rigging it for The Chiefs,” one fan tweeted.

“People have been talking about starting boycotts. Let’s start with the Superbowl. Make it the least watched one. Tired of the Chiefs and then getting calls other teams don’t get. #boycottsuperbowl,” wrote another.

Now, will these fans actually avoid watching the game? That much remains to be seen. We heard similar cries last year and the yet Super Bowl 58 between the Chiefs and 49ers averaged 120.25 million viewers, and an 81 percent share, both all-time records.

Maybe Chiefs fatigue has reached a new high. Maybe there are other reasons fans will find not to watch. But the more likely outcome is that they will do what they always do, watch the Super Bowl and just sit there mad as heck that their team isn’t playing in it. Because it’s the Super Bowl, and watching it is just what you do when the Super Bowl is on TV.
