There’s a legal issue brewing in the NFL this offseason, and it’s centered around one college player in particular. Brendan Sorsby’s decision to try to join the league through the Supplemental Draft has been the talk of the town. Sorsby, the former Texas Tech and Indiana quarterback, is currently embroiled in a gambling scandal that happened a few years ago.

Just recently, the NFL made its decision on Sorsby and the Supplemental Draft. In a letter written by Larry Ferazani, the general counsel of the NFL Management Council, the league stated that there will be no Supplemental Draft for multiple reasons. Among those reasons are doubts about Sorsby’s integrity after he was caught betting on Indiana’s games while he was with the team.

Former NFL star turned TV analyst Booger McFarland talked a bit about the league’s decision not to hold a Supplemental Draft. According to McFarland, Sorsby’s history of gambling on his team’s games casts serious doubt on his integrity, something that the league can’t let go of for obvious reasons.

“The one thing, from a league standpoint, that you can’t have even a shadow of a doubt about is whether the games are being played fairly,” McFarland said. “We all hear the rumors about, ‘Man, there goes the fix, it’s a fix in.’ You can’t have that question out there, and those are on social media. But as far as the NFL, they could not bring Brendan Sorsby in and have that hanging over their head right now.”

In their letter, Ferazani said that prior to Sorsby’s application, the league had no plans to hold a Supplemental Draft. Ferazani also says that Sorsby’s application was not enough to reverse the NFL’s decision on the matter, highlighting the ongoing investigation on the star’s gambling scandal.

“Your Petition — filed three business days before the deadline, without any supporting information or documentation, and only after abandoning your recent litigation efforts to avoid NCAA sanctions — does not provide a basis for the League to alter those plans,” the letter says.

Sorsby will be eligible to enter the 2027 NFL Draft as a regular draftee. However, Sorsby’s camp has announced its plans to sue the NFL after this decision, with alleged help from the NFL Players’ Association.
