Bo Nix did not play the best game of his NFL career against the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day but it was not his worst and the Denver Broncos still came out on top. Their quarterback got the job done.
He also showed the utmost class to his opponent along the way.
Nix risked a hernia injury with his classy gesture toward an NFL veteran who is nearly 100 pounds heavier. Kind of.
On a night where things were not clicking, especially during the first half, Nix willed his team to victory. The second-year sign-caller completed 26 of 38 passes for 182 yards and one touchdown with one interception. It was a good line, not a great line. However, he also added 42 yards and a touchdown on the ground as the team’s second-leading rusher.
Although the Broncos did not move the ball downfield on big gains, the constant chunk plays wore out the Chiefs’ defense. Denver kept pushing forward when Kansas City could not.
The former ran 71 plays in 39 minutes and 28 seconds of possession and converted 11 of 18 attempts on third down. The latter ran only 42 plays in 20 minutes and 32 seconds of possession and converted only four of 11 attempts on third down.
Some might say the Chiefs offense lost the game but the Broncos deserve just as much credit for doing exactly what needed to be done to come out on top. It wasn’t necessarily pretty or exciting but it was enough.
A win is a win is a win is a win and at the forefront of a win like that is the quarterback.
Quarterbacks get knocked down a lot. Duh. They are often helped up by their offensive lineman. Sometimes the defenders who hit them will reach out to pull them back to their feet.
The script was flipped on Thursday night!
Chris Jones, a (potential) future Hall of Famer, found himself on the ground at the feet of Nix as the ball advanced down field. The 25-year-old quarterback extended a helping hand to the 31-year-old defensive lineman.
It was a classy gesture.
However, Jones weighs approximately 310 pounds at 6-foot-6. Nix is “only” 6-foot-2, 217 pounds so his assist was not as helpful as it would be if the script was flipped. Jones did just as much to push himself up off of the ground as Nix did by pulling.
