Mile High Report
Terrible news for the Denver Broncos. Head Coach Sean Payton has announced that quarterback Bo Nix suffered a fractured ankle in overtime and will have season-ending surgery on Tuesday.
The announcement came during Payton’s postgame press conference following the Broncos’ thrilling overtime win against the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round. Nix will have surgery on Tuesday.
Payton said the injury occurred on the third-to-last play in overtime on a little QB keeper at around the 36-yard line. I remember that play it was the one where Nix rushed over to the center of the hash and he was shoved, but nothing egregious. But apparently it was enough to cause the fractured bone in his ankle.
The injury seems to have occurred on the play right before the huge defensive pass interference call on a Nix pass to Marvin Mims Jr. that ultimately sealed victory for the Broncos.
You can see from the video below that he got up from that designed run a bit gingerly and had glanced down at his ankle as he went back to the huddle. He gutted out the fractured bone for two more plays to put his team in position to kick the game-winning field goal and send the Broncos to the AFC Championship Game.
That means the AFC Championship Game will be with Jarrett Stidham under center. This is horrible news for Broncos Country and what seemingly appears to be the end of a fantastic season. Stidham has played well at times, though, but he’ll need the whole team to rally around and make the plays. Can he pull off a Nick Foles type playoff run? I sure hope so!
What a bummer, though. Not the news any of us wanted to hear….
