Before this game and the 4th quarter of the Giants game, the Broncos’ offense had been struggling. They were being shut out by the Giants through three quarters, mustering only 13 points against the Jets in London, and were down 17-3 to the Eagles in the fourth quarter before mounting an 18-point comeback for the win.
People were questioning Sean Payton, whether he should call plays, if Bo Nix is truly the answer at quarterback, and the offense in general. Well, ever since the beginning of the 4th quarter vs. the Giants, Bo Nix and the Broncos offense have been on fire.
In the 4th quarter vs. the Giants. Bo Nix had 218 total yards, 2 rushing and 2 passing touchdowns, and carried the Broncos to a historic and memorable comeback victory on Demaryius Thomas Day at the stadium. Following that, Nix threw for another 247 yards and 4 touchdowns vs. a battered and beaten Dallas Cowboys secondary while wearing their beautiful throwback uniforms.
So, in five quarters, Bo Nix has totaled 465 total yards, 8 total touchdowns(6 passing and 2 rushing), and led the Broncos offense to a whopping 77 points. In the past, that is how many points they have scored in a month(if not longer).
On top of that, a lot of the Broncos’ young players on offense have contributed during this stretch. Rookie running back R.J. Harvey had 4 touchdowns, Troy Franklin had 3 touchdowns, and rookie Pat Bryant caught his first career touchdown. The veterans have been playing well, too. Running back J.K. Dobbins totaled nearly 200 yards over these two games, while Courtland Sutton had 10 catches for nearly 150 yards.
Again, we are just talking five quarters of football.
Yes, this happened against a 2-win Giants squad and against an atrocious Dallas Cowboys defense, but the results still matter. We have seen this offense play down to their competition at times (look at the Jets game). I will never downplay an offense producing like this when we have seen the other side of the equation far too much recently.
Things do get more difficult next week when they face a very good Texans defense on the road. The Broncos will need to carry the momentum from their past 5 quarters into that game and continue scoring points and adding to that win column.
Hopefully, when we look back at this season, we can pinpoint these five quarters as the point where things changed for the better for this Denver Broncos squad.
