A new name has entered the 2026 NFL head coach carousel, and it’s a big one, as the Buffalo Bills have fired head coach Sean McDermott, according to a report by NFL Network.
The Bills fired McDermott following Buffalo’s overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Playoff on Saturday. The 51-year-old had been with the Bills since 2017, making him one of the NFL’s longest-tenured head coaches.
McDermott had a 98-50 record in the regular season, with an eye-popping .662 winning percentage, but was just 8-8 in the playoffs, making just two trips to the AFC Championship Game despite having Josh Allen as his quarterback for eight of his nine seasons.
The presence of Allen will immediately make the Bills one of the most attractive jobs in the head coach market, even though Buffalo is late getting into the market.
That could impact the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching search and the other seven teams still hiring prospective coaches. Now the Steelers will be competing with a pair of teams — the Bills and the Baltimore Ravens — with a former MVP at quarterback.
McDermott and former Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin were college teammates at William & Mary. Now both find themselves on the outside of the NFL coaching carousel in what has been an unprecedented offseason for turnover as far as veteran head coaches.
