A former punter of the Pittsburgh Steelers is looking for a new home.

The Buffalo Bills have waived former Pittsburgh Steelers punter Cameron Johnston from their injured reserve list, according to multiple reports.

Johnston, 33, signed with the Bills on Sep. 9 but has been out since suffering a foot injury in Week 4.

The Steelers surprisingly released Johnston on NFL cutdown day as part of their final roster cuts. He had signed a three-year, $9 million free agent contract with Pittsburgh in 2024 but played just one game after suffering a serious knee injury in last year’s season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

Johnston rehabbed the injury and appeared to return to full strength with the Steelers this offseason. However, he ended up losing the job to Corliss Waitman, who signed with the team as Johnston’s injury replacement in 2024 and played quite well, recording a career-long 71-yard punt and 27 of his 65 punts pinning opponents inside their own 20-yard line.

Johnston began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent out of the 2017 NFL Draft. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, who he would go on to play three seasons with and win Super Bowl LII.

In 2021, Johnston then signed with the Houston Texans and led the league in punting yards (4,108) and total punts (88). He played two more seasons in Houston before catching on with Pittsburgh in 2024.

It’s unclear if Johnston wants to continue playing in the NFL as injuries keep piling up late in his career, but he has proven to be one of the league’s best when healthy.

A native of Geelong, Victoria, Australia, Johnston played college football at Ohio State, where earned second and first-team honors in his junior and senior years and was named Eddleman-Fields Big Ten Punter of the Year.
