The Buffalo Bills are currently taking part in mandatory minicamp as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Bills will be led this year by head coach Joe Brady, who was promoted to the position after Sean McDermott was fired from the post following Buffalo’s playoff loss to the Denver Broncos last season.

Recently, Brady spoke on his emotions following McDermott’s unceremonious dismissal.

“I was broken,” Brady said, per the SHOUT! Buffalo Bills podcast, via Matt Parrino of Syracuse.com. “I was broken for a guy that I worked for. I was also broken for the rest of the coaching staff that is sitting there, like, we’re all out of jobs right now. There was a lot of emotion going on.”

“I’ve been in that position when a grown man looks at you and says, ‘Hey, we’re basically better off without you,’ ” Brady said. “It’s not a fun time.”

Many were wondering if McDermott’s leash in Buffalo might have finally run out after the team’s latest early playoff exit, and the answer to that question turned out to be yes. Many were frustrated when the Bills opted to promote from within instead of conducting a more comprehensive search for their next head coach, but the hope is that Brady will be able to take this offense, and team as a whole, to another level in 2026.

Still, he has nothing but appreciation for McDermott during his time in Buffalo.

“It also dawned on me that the only thing I won’t be is the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills,” he said. “I’m only in Buffalo because of Sean and the opportunities that he gave me.”

The Bills’ season is slated to get underway in early September.
