Buffalo Bills backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky performed a classy and heartwarming gesture for his teammates during Sunday’s regular-season finale against the New York Jets.
With a wild card spot secured, Bills head coach Sean McDermott decided to rest his key starters in Week 18. Despite that, Buffalo cruised to a 35-8 blowout win to finish with a 12-5 record.
Mitch Trubisky had a field day against the lowly Jets, completing 22 of 29 pass attempts for 259 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Los Angeles Chargers’ Week 18 loss to the Denver Broncos helped Buffalo snag the AFC’s No. 5 seed. The Bills visit the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card Round on Sunday (1:00 p.m. EST).
Playoff seeding wasn’t the only thing on the line in Week 18. Multiple Buffalo players had incentives in their contracts, and Mitch Trubisky was sure to take note of them before the game.
Per Nick Sabato of the Niagara Gazette, Trubisky spoke to his teammates to see what they needed to reach specific incentives. Trubisky ensured that running back Ty Johnson and tight end Dawson Knox hit them:
“Mitchell Trubisky wanted to know who needed to hit incentives before entering the game.
The Buffalo Bills second-string quarterback knew tight end Dawson Knox needed 7 yards for $100,000 and a touchdown for another $100,000. He got them on the first drive of Buffalo’s 35-8 win over the New York Jets.
Trubisky also knew Ty Johnson needed two touchdowns to hit a $375,000 bonus when he flipped a short pass to the running back for a 6-yard score with 12:05 remaining. But Trubisky also likely made himself some more with his performance, it might just have to wait until free agency hits in March.”
Johnson had two total touchdowns in the game to reach his incentives. He received additional playing time when McDermott opted to rest star running back and 2025 rushing champion James Cook for most of the contest.
Trubisky is in his second stint with the Bills, having re-joined them in 2024 free agency. He was Josh Allen’s backup in 2021 before spending two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he made seven starts.
Now, the Bills travel to Duval County to take on the surprising 13-4 Jaguars. For what it’s worth, Buffalo has won six straight games with Brad Allen (the head official) serving as the referee.
