The Indianapolis Colts benched Anthony Richardson before the season in favor of Daniel Jones, and so far, it has worked out. The Colts are 2-0, and they look like one of the better teams in the NFL through two games. Daniel Jones’ experience has been a massive difference maker for the Colts, and he has been playing well through two games.
On Tuesday’s episode of NFL Live, Marcus Spears praised Daniel Jones’ performance in the first two games this season. He also said Tiel Jones’ experience has been a massive difference maker, which is why he has been able to play well so far this season. Jones has been there and done that, and it has reflected well on the Colts so far this year.
Spears said, “Daniel Jones threw 34 passes and didn’t turn the football over. We need to have a bigger conversation about quarterback development because we have seen that Shane Steichen is a guy who can build and mold quarterbacks.
“You take Anthony Richardson in the draft and can’t develop him, but the difference is that Daniel Jones has been in the wars and has previous experience in a bad situation that he got out of. Sometimes it’s about going to coaches that help quarterbacks be mistake-free, and that alone could be the difference.” Daniel Jones has two passing touchdowns and 588 passing yards with a 71.4% completion percentage through two games. The most significant statistic for Jones in these two games is that he has not turned the ball over once. He was known for bad turnovers with the Giants, but good things have changed with the Colts.
Daniel Jones has had a winding NFL story. He was selected out of Duke with the sixth pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. His time with the Giants was filled with inconsistent play, but thanks to one good year that saw him lead the Giants to the playoffs and a Wildcard win against the Minnesota Vikings, the Giants stuck by him longer than they should have.
After being released by the Giants, Jones signed with the Vikings’ practice squad before finding a spot with the Colts this past season after signing a one-year deal worth $14 million.
How far Jones can take the Colts remains to be seen, but Indianapolis has been doing well with him under center.
