PITTSBURGH — Spencer Anderson has been an extra on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive line — and then some. With the extent of starting guard Isaac Seumalo’s injury up in the air, at least until head coach Mike Tomlin talks on Tuesday, the versatile understudy could see a much larger role going forward.
“Me going in was kinda (how it was) during the preseason,” Anderson said Monday, about 14 hours removed from a 35-25 primetime loss to the Green Bay Packers. “Obviously, I feel most comfortable at guard, so it’s no different, honestly. It’s just another day at the office. I know, obviously, we couldn’t run our heavy stuff because Isaac had got hurt. … Things happen in the midst of a game and we can’t use that as an excuse or anything. We’ve still gotta execute.”
Anderson would’ve liked for the Steelers’ offense to pound it out more, but understood the situation with being down and needing to pass so much. Anderson played a part in the team’s passing attack early on, hauling in his first career pass and trudging four yards downfield.
He’s reported as eligible plenty this season, so he didn’t even expect to have his name called and Aaron Rodgers throw the ball his way.
“When I came in, I figured it’d be a run,” Anderson said. “Then once I heard the play call, I was like, ‘Oh, we’re for real here.’ And chipped and got out to the flat. … I mean, I don’t know all the route concepts, but I believe I was the check-down. I saw Aaron’s head turn right, middle, then I’m like, ‘Uh oh. The ball’s coming to me.’ He kind of threw a rocket, but I caught it.”
