With the Murray-McCarthy quarterback debate intentionally set aside, Darren and Dave zero in on what they’ll actually be watching when the pads come on. Darren is locked in on rookie defensive tackle Domonique “Big Citrus” Orange, calling him the best chance the Vikings have had to replace Linval Joseph’s run-stuffing dominance since his peak years.
“The Vikings have not had a big dominant run-stuffing defensive tackle since Linval Joseph’s peak years in 2015 to 2018,” Darren noted.
Linebacker Jake Golday also earns serious attention — Darren wants to see whether the 6’4″ Cincinnati product can leapfrog veteran Ivan Pace Jr. on the depth chart. Safety prospect Jakobe Thomas rounds out the rookie watch list, with Darren believing Brian Flores will find every possible way to use his do-it-all skill set if he translates his Miami production to the NFL level.
On offense, the interior offensive line depth is flagged as a genuine vulnerability — with Blake Brandel’s elevation to center leaving the guard and center backups dangerously thin beyond Michael Jurgens (309 career snaps) and Joe Huber (89 snaps). The punter competition between veteran Johnny Hekker and Australian prospect Brett Thorson adds some late-July intrigue.
In the episode’s “This Week in Vikings Land” segment, the guys discuss ESPN’s NFL positional rankings, where Justin Jefferson checked in at No. 2 at receiver — still elite, even after a down statistical year driven largely by poor quarterback play. Darren makes the case that Jefferson’s age (just turned 27), elite route running, and a healthier 2026 quarterback situation should produce a vintage Justin Jefferson season.
“I think we will see him return to the kind of numbers we’re used to seeing from him,” Darren said.
The guys also analyze Kyler Murray’s fit in the KOC offense, arguing his mobility and RPO ability can unlock dimensions of the Vikings’ passing attack that Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold simply couldn’t provide.
Finally, a detour into Brad Childress history — sparked by a local interview — gives Darren a chance to break down the three reasons Zygi Wilf pulled the plug in 2010: locker room dysfunction, unilateral roster moves (cutting Randy Moss without telling ownership), and a fan base that never embraced him.
