Not everyone believes the Pittsburgh Steelers should acquire a wide receiver before the NFL trade deadline.
The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be turning over every rock to find another wide receiver to pair with DK Metcalf in their offense. However, not everyone thinks they need to acquire another playmaker before the NFL trade deadline.
Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger recently revealed that he is among the minority that believe such a move is not essential.
“At the moment, I don’t think that’s necessary,” Roethlisberger said on the latest episode of “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger.” “What is your goal of getting a second receiver right now? I don’t know what our averages are, but it feels like we’re scoring 30 points a game. That’s a goal. Do you want 300-plus yards passing per game or do you want a consistent offense that is scoring points, that is balanced?”
The Steelers offense has been playing very well through their first six games of the season. While the unit is not averaging 30 points a game, it does rank in then top third of the league with a 25-points-per-game average.
Pittsburgh’s offense is in the bottom half of the league in passing yards per game (203), but quarterback Aaron Rodgers seems to be making due just fine with his current arsenal of weapons.
Roethlisberger reiterated just that.
“Right now, it doesn’t seem to me like the offense is an issue,” Roethlisberger continued. “Would another receiver come in and be helpful? Yeah, but it’s not like we’re throwing the ball all over the field.”
Instead, it has been the Steelers’ defense that has been the team’s Achilles heel. The group is currently allowing the fifth-most total yards per game (374.7) and has been the reason why Pittsburgh has lost two shootouts in which its offense scored 30-plus points, including its Week 7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
That doesn’t mean the Steelers are going to try to acquire another piece to their defense, especially after investing a ton of resources into the unit this offseason. But for a team that is clearly gearing up to land its next franchise quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft, holding onto any extra draft capital to do so will help.
