The Cincinnati Bengals have made a quarterback move — but not the one fans were hoping for.

The Bengals announced Tuesday that they released veteran quarterback Mike White from the practice squad. White signed with the team Sept. 16 following Joe Burrow’s turf toe injury that has sidelined the franchise quarterback since Week 2. Burrow is slated to return in December, but if the Bengals aren’t in playoff contention, he could be shut down for the season.

In a corresponding move, the Bengals signed rookie defensive tackle Howard Cross III back to the practice squad.

Dwindling Options at Quarterback

With White gone, that’s one less option Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has in replacing Jake Browning, who moved into the starting role after Burrow went down.

The Bengals are 0-3 under Browning, who has thrown for 757 yards with six touchdowns and eight interceptions. Taylor told reporters Monday that he wasn’t ready to announce who will be under center for Cincinnati’s Week 6 game against the Green Bay Packers.

White, who previously played for the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills, has a 2-5 record in seven career starts, completing 61.4% of his passes for 2,247 yards, nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

The Bengals have Brett Rypien on the 53-man roster and Sean Clifford on the practice squad as their remaining quarterback options.

At 1-4, the Bengals are tied for last place with the Cleveland Browns in the AFC North.
