This is something to keep an eye on.

The Cincinnati Bengals may lose Trey Brown this offseason, but in doing so, they may secure a few much-needed third-round picks.

The backstory is that Brown has been a star in the making, and, per Paul Dehner Jr., really is “invaluable” to this team’s personnel department.

However, at a small-market team, there always appears to be greener grass, and having secured a second interview with the New York Jets, there’s a non-zero chance that Brown heads elsewhere this offseason.

Below is why the Bengals may secure a few picks because of his departure via the NFL.

This initiative provides that the prior employer-club of a minority employee who has been hired by another club as its head coach or primary football executive (general manager) will receive compensation in the form of a special compensatory draft selection in the third round of each of the next two drafts, or in each of the next three drafts if two minority employees from the employer-club are hired for these positions by another club or clubs. Special compensatory selections are awarded in draft selection order after all other compensatory selections in round three and are denoted with an asterisk in the following table.

The Bengals have had the Overland Park, Kansas native on their staff for the last few seasons. He started in the league as a scouring assistant with the Patriots and was promoted to area scout before switching to the Eagles and eventually joining the Bengals in 2021. Brown went undrafted out of UCLA in 2008.

Cincinnati has seen its coaching staff gutted this offseason with the firing of Lou Anarumo, among many others who were let go after a disappointing campaign this past season.

While Brown’s potential exodus would be a blow, the few third-round picks the team would receive is at least some type of compensation for having to replace some of its front office as well. But it’s hard to truly know what kind of impact Brown is making on the Bengals, which could actually be worth more than a few mid-round draft picks.
