There’s an old saying that goes, “The only difference between a rut and a grave is depth.” When it comes to the NFL, if you fall into a rut you fall behind and it can mean metaphorical death for your chances of winning a Super Bowl.

This is the position the Pittsburgh Steelers find them in. The Steelers are playing in 2025 with a philosophy from 2010 and unfortunately, they are being outpaced by the rest of the league. Fans have been saying this for a long time but it was good to hear former Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger support this on his Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger Podcast.

“You have to evolve,” Roethlisberger said. “You have to evolve as a team. You can’t just assume that everybody wants to come play for the Steelers anymore like they used to.”

Pittsburgh is facing this as they head into free agency with lots of money to spend. What would motivate a premier free agent, especially on offense? What would be the draw for a wide receiver like Tee Higgins or Chris Godwin, with head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith both resigning to a methodical, plodding scheme and more questions than answers at quarterback?
