Windy City Gridiron
On her latest Making Monsters podcast, Taylor Doll is joined by two Chicago Bears legends to help preview today’s Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers.
First, she’s joined by former Bears wideout and current ESPN 1000 host, Tom Waddle, to preview the offensive side of the ball. They chat about the offense’s progress throughout the season, getting Rome Odunze back, and what the offensive game plan should be against the Packers.
“Green Bay doesn’t play a ton of man coverage. I think they play 18, 19 percent of man,” Waddle said. “If I’m Ben Johnson, I will use formations in motion to try to see if I can get them into man coverage. And if I can, I’m going to try to take advantage of the mismatches that occur when you have Colston Loveland matched up on whether it’s a nickel corner or safety or even a linebacker.”
Taylor also talks with former Bears safety Doug Plank, who literally put the 46 in the famed 46 Defense. They discuss the defensive struggles this season, what Dennis Allen has done right, how they can contain the run, and slow down Green Bay’s Christian Watson this weekend. But he also shares how much the games against Green Bay mean to the Bears.
“I remember it like it was yesterday,” Plank said of his games vs the Packers. “So these games, they really are important. It makes a difference. It makes a difference to the players. I don’t care how many years you played in this league, you know, you play against Green Bay, it’s something you will always remember: the preparation, the pregame talk by your coach, just the mindset of that whole week. You don’t need to motivate anybody. Everybody is so motivated, the coaches, the players. This is going to be exciting.”
