The Chicago Bears enter Year 2 under Ben Johnson with bigger expectations and a more experienced Caleb Williams. Johnson sounds more comfortable with his evolution as a play caller.
The Bears’ offense no longer carries surprise value after last season’s breakout. Opposing defenses spent the offseason studying how Williams and Johnson built an 11-6 NFC North title campaign.
Still, the 39-year-old head coach believes growth comes from adapting, not clinging to old scripts. That approach could shape how the Bears offense uses Luther Burden III, Rome Odunze, and Colston Loveland.
In an article posted to the league’s official website, NFL.com’s Kevin Patra shared Johnson’s comments from the final day of minicamp Thursday, where the Bears head coach explained how he views his situational growth and personnel fit.
“I’d like to think I’m better in situations than I’ve been in the past,” Johnson told reporters. “You continue to grow, and you learn from your own mistakes or things that have gone well for you. You look to tailor it to the guys that are available, and we have different guys this year than we had last year and certainly anywhere else I’ve been. The challenge is making sure that we’re all coordinated, on the same page, and putting them all in a spot to succeed.”
The admission from the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator showed a coach thinking beyond pure scheme. Johnson understands the offense needs timing, spacing, and defined roles as much as creative play calls.
Williams gives the Bears a franchise quarterback capable of handling more layers. However, Johnson must balance that growth with the skill players around him.
That may mean fewer rigid concepts and more tailored answers. Burden brings burst, Odunze offers boundary strength, and Loveland can stress defenses inside.
For the Bears, Johnson’s evolution could decide whether last season becomes a launching point or a ceiling. His willingness to adjust gives the Bears a stronger path.
The message was not flashy, but it was revealing. The second-year head coach knows the Bears must adapt before opposing defenses force the team to do so.
