Ben Johnson has addressed his viral comment following the Chicago Bears’ exploits against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night.
Johnson coached the Bears to a comeback win over Green Bay in the Wild Card round. He reveled in the victory after cameras caught his curious handshake with Packers coach Matt LaFleur.
He didn’t care that mics were around and cameras were rolling when the team got to the locker room, and he was heard saying, “F**k the Packers! F**k them! F**king hate those guys.”
Johnson hasn’t been in Chicago that long, but he has fully embraced the rivalry between the two teams. In any case, he was with the Detroit Lions before his current gig, so he probably hated them from a different angle then.
Legendary basketball commentator Dick Vitale deemed the statement to be in poor taste. He took to social media to slam the Bears’ HC, branding his behavior “classless.”
***“Total CLASSLESS attitude in winning by BEN JOHNSON coach of the @ChicagoBears in the fab comeback to beat the @packers. Main theme should have been the gutty comeback not the childish F__ Packers comments, “***Vitale tweeted.
Johnson spoke to reporters on Monday and doubled down. He also revealed that he had a conversation with Bears owner George McCaskey, who shared his take.
“I don’t like that team,” he explained.“George and I have talked, and we’re on the same page.”

Johnson’s locker-room shenanigans have been criticized outside of Chicago, but he is beloved in the city. After all, fans did get free hot dogs after he went shirtless several weeks ago.
The rookie coach wasted no time getting under LaFleur’s skin when he joined the Bears last ahead of last season. He told the media he “kinda enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year” after a reporter asked why he chose Chicago.
Johnson was 1-1 against LaFleur in the regular season, but won the more important game of their three meetings on Saturday.
