Most reports out of Halas Hall, from what was a shorts and shells practice, were that the Chicago Bears offense looked pretty good for a second consecutive day. While yesterday’s miscues from the offense got most of the headlines, it was an overall positive day for the unit. Today, the defense had its moments for sure, but Caleb Williams and the number one offense stepped up again as they look to ready themselves for Friday’s joint practice with the Buffalo Bills. The Bears and Bill play on Sunday night in their second preseason contest.
Caleb connected with several receivers, but fellow second-year pro Rome Odunze was the one who stood out today. As rookies, Caleb and Rome weren’t always on the same page, but these two are too talented and work too hard not to see some sophomore synergy.
The left tackle position still isn’t settled as Braxton Jones and Theo Benedet both worked with the ones. An interesting development today was Jones getting reps at right tackle, which is where rookie Ozzy Trapillo has been the last two days. I’m sure they want to ensure the backup left tackle is cross-trained enough to also fill in on the right side if need be. Kiran Amegadjie was the third team left tackle for a second consecutive day.
Rookie Luke Newman was getting some left guard reps with the ones, so I assume he’s cleared concussion protocol after leaving Sunday’s game.
With Nickleback Kyler Gordon still sidelined, the Bears gave Nick McCloud those starter reps today over the usual backup nickel, Josh Blackwell. Corner Tre Flowers left the practice field with an apparent injury.
Backup quarterback Case Keenum left practice early; those in attendance spotted no injury, nor did the team give an update afterward, but that allowed Austin Reed to get all the third-team reps at QB.
The Bears ended practice with some offensive linemen vs defensive linemen one-on-ones, as receiver vs defensive back.
