Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III is wearing a helmet again, but his status ahead of Week 1 of the regular season remains in doubt.

Pittsburgh media confirmed that the speedy wide receiver returned to practice on Monday for the first time since suffering what Steelers Now reported as a “minor abdominal muscle injury” that kept him out of the team’s first two weeks of the preseason.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, however, Austin didn’t provide a clear update on his status.

“Whatever the medical staff and Coach T (Mike Tomlin) say, I’m going to follow that,” he said regarding his Week 1 availability, per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.

“I’m right on point, right on the correct timeline and so yeah, I don’t know if necessarily (it’s) big — I guess it is,” he said regarding his return to practice, also per Pryor. “But I feel like I’m right on the correct timeline of things.”

Listed as a starting wide receiver on the Steelers’ depth chart, Austin is expected to have a sizable role on offense in the coming season. However, Pittsburgh hosted veteran receiver Gabe Davis for a visit on Monday, showing that the team is still exploring other options ahead of Week 1.
