It’s been close to two years since 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk last appeared in an NFL game and around six months since head coach Kyle Shanahan said he’d ghosted the franchise at some point during last season. Now, the man who willingly forfeited nearly $30 million is facing some legal trouble after telling on himself in a video that led to a warrant being issued for his arrest.
There have been a number of people who’ve made a living as a wide receiver in the NFL who’ve ended up at the center of some strange sagas, and Brandon Aiyuk has managed to join the ranks that also include Terrell Owens, Antonio Brown, and Puka Nacua thanks to what’s unfolded since he was sidelined after tearing multiple ligaments in his knee toward the start of the 2024 season.
The wideout, who was selected by the 49ers with the 25th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, was still rehabbing his MCL and ACL ahead of the 2025 campaign. It appeared he’d be healthy enough to suit up at some point during it, but that did not end up being the case.
In November, San Francisco announced its plans to void the $27 million Aiyuk had been slated to make after he refused to report to the team to work on his recovery.
He seemed relatively unbothered by that development when you consider he turned down the chance to file a grievance, and the only time he was seen in the vicinity of Levi’s Stadium after that development was a video where he filmed himself speeding past the venue at 104 MPH.

Now, he’s found himself facing some discipline over that clip.
In December, Aiyuk decided to document the joyride he took in the Cadillac that hit triple-digits while flying past a road next to Levi’s Stadium where the posted speed limit is 40 MPH.
The Santa Clara Police Department confirmed it was looking into the video, and according to The California Post, the case was handed over to the county’s District Attorney’s Office midway through January.
It took more than four-and-a-half months to move through the system, but on Wednesday, we learned the WR was the subject of an arrest warrant after being slapped with a “misdemeanor charge of exhibition of speed.”
That particular charge is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a fine that cannot exceed $500, and it does not appear Aiyuk has been detained or turned himself in as of this writing.
It’s also unclear what the future holds for the 28-year-old on the NFL front. The 49ers have made it clear they’ve given up on him, and while some teams have apparently expressed interest in a potential trade, they’ve also been unable to contact him while exploring a transaction with the franchise.
