Former NFL quarterback Mike Kafka may be the interim coach for now, but the New York Giants will be embarking on a full-blown coaching search once the offseason gets underway. While their 30th-ranked scoring defense requires attention, finding someone who can maximize Jaxson Dart’s potential will be a key factor too.
Several candidates have already been linked to the Giants’ head coaching vacancy, but since the season is still ongoing, no interviews have taken place. Yet.
However, that doesn’t mean coaching candidates aren’t trying to catch the attention of the Giants’ organization well ahead of time. That includes former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.
Appearing on Thursday’s edition of The Pat McAfee Show, McCarthy couldn’t help but gush about the Giants’ franchise quarterback. Is McCarthy campaigning for a chance to coach the Giants, where he’d face his old Cowboys team at least twice per season? You be the judge.
“What Jaxson Dart does naturally, you can’t teach,” McCarthy said. “His ability to make plays is phenomenal, and I think he has an extremely bright future.”

But it wasn’t all positive. McCarthy also noted that the “most important ability is availability and you’ve gotta be available for your team.” He later said he “loves the way Dart plays, but he’s gotta get outta bounds there.”
Everyone, including Dart, would agree with McCarthy’s assessment that Dart would have been better off stepping out of bounds rather than straddling the sideline for a few extra yards.
Ultimately, it appears that McCarthy would be more than open to accepting the Giants’ head coaching job, if he got the offer. Yet, he’ll have to land an interview from general manager Joe Schoen first.
