Raheem Morris has gotten two chances to be an NFL head coach. After a three-year stint, the Atlanta Falcons determined that he’s not the right man for the job. A pair of eight-win seasons, followed by a four-win debut in Atlanta, certainly didn’t help. Nor did missing the playoffs all three seasons.
On Monday, the Falcons took a strong step toward replacing Morris, and they’re swinging for the fences.
According to the team, the Falcons have completed their first interview with former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. The two sides did not speak in person, but it’s possible they will meet for a second time before all is said and done.
Harbaugh has yet to hold any face-to-face head coaching interviews since being let go by the Ravens. He has, however, already held “preliminary and extensive” phone calls with the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, and Tennessee Titans.
Harbaugh’s plan is to use the information he gathered from the various teams making their recruiting pitches to him, and figure out which ones he’s like to officially meet with later this week.
As the top NFL head coaching candidate available, Harbaugh is clearly in high demand. Yet he also holds all the leverage, as every team with a coaching vacancy (except the Ravens) has already expressed interest in hiring him.
