Art Rooney: Steelers Next head coach not on current staff

The Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL were hit with a bombshell on Tuesday afternoon when Mike Tomlin informed the team he was stepping down as head coach. Tomlin had been the Steelers’ head coach for the last 19 seasons and was the longest-tenured head coach in major American sports.

Team president Art Rooney II held a press conference on Wednesday to discuss what’s next for the Steelers and their head coaching search. When asked if anyone on the Steelers’ current staff was a candidate, Rooney said no.

“Right now, I don’t think anybody on our staff is a candidate,” Rooney said.

This eliminates former Atlanta Falcons head coach and current Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith from contention for the job.

It was reported by Albert Breer that the Steelers had Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula on their radar should Tomlin step away, making his name arguably the biggest to circle as Pittsburgh begins its search for its fourth head coach since 1969.
