Chiefs headlines for Friday, January 24
Why Gennaro picked the Bills: Because I’m insane. At least according to a trite quotation often misattributed to Albert Einstein: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Kansas City just keeps doing the same thing over and over again, and here I am expecting a different result.
Playing in their seventh consecutive AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs are eyeing a fifth Super Bowl appearance in six seasons. Over the past 13 months, Kansas City’s starters have lost one game. Of course, that lone setback came against these Bills. The Chiefs’ mid-November defeat at Buffalo wasn’t surprising, either, considering the Bills were favored in the game. Not to mention, the victory improved Josh Allen’s regular-season record against Patrick Mahomes to 4-1. But it’s a different story in the playoffs, where Mahomes boasts a perfect 3-0 mark in the QB duel. So, what makes me believe Allen will finally slay his Chief tormentor in the postseason? Well, speaking of insanity ...

Kansas City Chiefs
Are they cutting it too close?
On one hand, the Chiefs are unmatched when it comes to finishing games, excelling at both situational strategy and execution. And yet it stands to reason that the more you play with fire, the more likely you are to get burned. This isn’t 2019, when Mahomes was slinging the rock deep every other play, lifting Andy Reid’s attack to high-scoring victories. Eleven of the Chiefs’ 16 wins that Mahomes started this season have been one-score decisions, with Steve Spagnuolo’s defense again running the show.

The Chiefs taught us … not a damn thing.
I don’t mean to dismiss what Kansas City has accomplished this season. The two-time defending champs tied for the league’s best record at 15-2, won the AFC West for the ninth straight year, and are now just two wins away from doing something no other team has been able to accomplish in the Super Bowl era: win three titles back-to-back-to-back. The 2024 Chiefs could go down as one of the most historically significant teams ever, and they deserve their proper respect. But that doesn’t mean this version of Kansas City taught us anything that we hadn’t already learned from the past versions of the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, Steve Spagnuolo, late-game devil magic, and a few favorable calls from the referees can cover up for a lot of weaknesses. That’s all I got from this team, but we already knew that.
