It’s somewhat puzzling that the Pittsburgh Steelers have done nothing related to their two free-agent quarterbacks with just a few weeks until the start of free agency. Any potential offensive free agent the Steelers might want to sign is going to need to see some stability at quarterback before they would commit to the Steelers.
But there might be a method to the Steelers madness. Thursday is Day One of the NFL scouting combine when the Steelers and every NFL franchise will get a great look at all of the top prospects in the 2025 NFL draft.
And maybe, just maybe, the Steelers want to get a closer look at this quarterback class before they make a financial commitment to Justin Fields or Russell Wilson.
Pittsburgh isn’t in the running to pick top quarterback prospect Cam Ward but there are still some really fascinating guys who will go on Day Two who might fit what the Steelers want to do.
Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart and Ohio State’s Will Howard are both big, athletic guys with strong arms and high football IQs. The Steelers will surely give both of them a close look and if they win them over, it might impact how the Steelers proceed at quarterback in free agency.
Steelers general manager Omar Khan addressed the media on Tuesday from the combine and noted that the team wants something done before the start of the league year.
“It’s an ideal scenario,” Khan said. “You’d like to have this done before the start of the league year. Obviously that impact, who you sign impacts, you know, the type of receiver you may go after. or how you build the rest of the team. So all that has an effect.”
