Though the Pittsburgh Steelers are seemingly considering all options at quarterback, signing Justin Fields seems to make the most sense this offseason. The clock is ticking for the team to figure out what direction it’s going in.
From Fields’ perspective, ESPN’s Matt Bowen doesn’t think there’s a better fit anywhere else but the Steel City.
“With his dual-threat ability and improved footwork and vision in the pocket, the Steelers could re-sign Fields over Russell Wilson,” Bowen wrote Tuesday. “In six starts with the Steelers last season, Fields completed 66.3% of his throws with five touchdown passes and one interception. He also rushed for 289 yards and five more scores on 62 carries.”
Spotrac calculates Fields’ market value to be a one-year, $6.4 million deal.
If the Steelers and Justin Fields aren’t able to iron out a deal before he hits the open market, there are other teams that could have interest in him. Rumors suggest the New York Jets like what they’ve seen from him.
“They could have some interest,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said. “They like the idea of a dual-threat quarterback. He’s younger. I’m told Fields has looked at that roster, sees some intrigue there, too. They have some good young pieces, like Garrett Wilson and a good defense.”
Last week, Sportsbetting.ag listed Justin Fields as having the highest odds of any current NFL quarterback to start for the Jets next season. Fields built a rapport with Wilson while the pair was at Ohio State. The signal-caller posted a 20-2 record as the Buckeyes’ starter before Chicago drafted him No. 11 overall in 2021.
Fields landed in Pittsburgh before last season and threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception during his first go-round in black and gold.
