Late last week, defensive end Charles Omenihu discussed the agony of missing a Super Bowl against his former team, the San Francisco 49ers, after tearing his ACL two weeks earlier. He described an anxious feeling as Sunday drew nearer with another chance for him to appear in the big game.
In truth, Omenihu is one of several Chiefs set to play in New Orleans two weeks from now who ended last season on injured reserve and were unavailable against San Francisco.
After Sunday’s victory, cornerback Trent McDuffie spoke with team play-by-play announcer Mitch Holthus and expressed gratitude for the opportunity now before both Omenihu and safety Bryan Cook, who joined the Chiefs in McDuffie’s 2022 draft class and missed the final two months last season with a leg injury.
“Right when the game hit zero,” he recalled, “Me and B-Cook were just sitting on the bench, and tears were coming from my eyes…The energy that these boys bring. You just talk about Charles and B-Cook alone, even [cornerback Jaylen Watson], who was injured this year, these guys want to play. You have guys who come in here each and every day going to work, want to go go out there and be their best selves, and want to help the team improve – I love guys like that. That’s the culture that we have around here.”
