Anthony Richardson seeking second opinion on shoulder injury, is surgery required?

Daniel Jones’ path to becoming a starting quarterback may be getting easier and easier. Earlier reports pointed to Anthony Richardson being set to miss mandatory minicamp this week due to lingering soreness in his previously surgically repaired shoulder.

Now, it sounds as if Richardson won’t be around due to the former No. 4 overall pick needing to seek a second opinion on his shoulder. Interestingly enough, Richardson is seeking out the opinion of Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the doctor who previously performed his surgery.

While Dr. Neal ElAttrache is well-known in the NFL circles for routinely performing key surgeries on football athletes, this is the last news Colts fans want to hear about the 2023 first-round pick. Richardson last had shoulder surgery two years ago, so any further inflammation is concerning.

Yet, the Colts’ team doctors evaluated Richardson’s shoulder and determined there is no structural damage to his arm. They do not believe Richardson will require another surgery right now, yet that’s what the second opinion will uncover.

For now, Jones will benefit from the additional reps with the starting offense, giving the former first-round pick a chance to build chemistry with his new receivers. Yet, the Colts surely want this to be a fair fight where the best man wins, and that process will be the most efficient with Richardson competing at Jones’ side.
