Things appear to have gone from bad to worse for poor Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson.
Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, lost his job to Daniel Jones in the preseason. And Jones has since gone on to be one of the surprises of the young season, helping the Colts to a surprising 4-1 start.
But now it appears that Richardson has also lost the backup quarterback job to rookie Riley Leonard, at least temporarily, after suffering one of the more amusing injuries you’ll ever see.
Reports emerged late Sunday morning that Richardson would not be active for Indianapolis’ games against the Arizona Cardinals.
Many took that to believe that he had lost the backup job to Leonard, which would be a fairly damning indictment of the third-year quarterback.
But as it turns out, Richardson suffered an injury in pre-game warmups that dictated his inactive status. And while you never want to see a player get injured, the way Richardson got hurt is borderline hilarious.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Richardson suffered an eye injury during pregame workouts while working with resistance bands.
To me, that means that Richardson likely had a band snap back into his face and his eye, causing damage. Presuming the damage isn’t a threat to his long-term vision, that is so, so funny.
Who among us has not looked like an idiot while using resistance bands when one snaps back and hits us in the face? It’s almost a rite of passage for anyone who has regularly done banded workouts or stretches.
But Anthony Richardson is an elite athlete! Those sorts of clumsy things aren’t supposed to happen to them!
As it turns out, NFL quarterbacks are just like the rest of us. But man, poor Anthony Richardson feels like he could use a break from the universe right about now. And we can all relate to that on a deeply spiritual level at one time or another in our lives.
