DETROIT — A pair of young Pittsburgh Steelers offensive skill players — tailback Kaleb Johnson and receiver Roman Wilson — won’t be playing against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Those two lead Mike Tomlin’s inactives for the Week 16 road matchup. Joining them are outside linebackers T.J. Watt (lung) and Nick Herbig (hamstring), cornerback James Pierre (calf) and guard Isaac Seumalo (triceps). Rookie sixth-round draft pick Will Howard is the Steelers’ emergency third quarterback.
Johnson, a rookie third-round draft pick, has carried the ball 28 times this year for 69 yards and a pair of first downs. He’s been the Steelers’ tertiary option in the backfield behind Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell, the second of whom has emerged as a massive part of Arthur Smith’s offense.
Wilson hasn’t taken the field for the Steelers since their loss against the Buffalo Bills at home last month. Veterans Adam Thielen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling have factored into the offense, with the latter catching a touchdown pass in last Monday’s home win over the Miami Dolphins.
Wilson has 12 receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns this season, his second with the Steelers after being taken in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
