After losing DeShon Elliott for multiple weeks, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost their second strong safety of the week, as Jabrill Peppers was ruled out for the team’s Week 9 game against the Indianapolis Colts with a quad injury.

Peppers was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, but was limited on Thursday and did not practice on Friday before being ruled out.

The Steelers traded for Kyle Dugger from the New England Patriots this week, and he practiced with the team twice this week. With both Elliott and Peppers ruled out, Dugger is the lone strong safety on the roster entering Sunday’s game. With Dugger not getting much time to practice, it’s unclear if or how much the team will want him to play, but the Steelers may not have many other options.

“We’ll just work around with the guys in the building and see what we got,” defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said before practice on Thursday. “We’ll see what we do at the end of the week and how we come through it. We’ll see where Kyle is, and we’ll have a contingency plan in place if he’s not available.”

Peppers has played six games with the Steelers since signing with the team early in the season, making one start, recording eight tackles and recovering a fumble.

In addition to their problems at strong safety, the Steelers could also be without free safety Chuck Clark, who did not practice on Friday due to an illness and is listed as questionable.
