PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers could be in trouble at cornerback. Trying to block for punt returner Calvin Austin III, nickelback Brandin Echols stumbled and fell to the ground.
Echols gingerly walked past the numbers on the field toward the sideline, then crouched before getting there. Trainers guided him to the blue medical tent behind the Steelers’ bench, but not before he knelt once more.
If Echols can’t get back on the field against the Miami Dolphins, Jalen Ramsey will have to move to the slot, while Chuck Clark replaces Ramsey at safety beside Kyle Dugger. Ramsey is the Steelers’ only backup cornerback available.
Echols exited the tent with his helmet, but with a noticeable limp. He didn’t return to the game when the Steelers’ defense retook the field, but he stood on the sideline, appearing to be ready when his name was called. He entered on a third-and-6 shortly after.
Asante Samuel Jr., starting on the boundary for the injured James Pierre (calf) had an interception during the Dolphins’ second possession.
Echols spent the first four seasons of his career with the New York Jets, then joined the Steelers as a free agent this past offseason. Entering Monday, he had 42 total tackles, a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery.
UPDATE: Echols later return to the game.
