Mahomes will take the field for what is also expected to be Hollywood Brown’s Chiefs’ debut.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took the field for all three of the team’s practices this week, which should put him in position to start against the Houston Texans on Saturday.
“He worked out this week full — and will most likely end up playing,” said head coach Andy Reid in his final press conference of the week on Thursday.
Mahomes left the Chiefs’ Week 15 game against the Cleveland Browns midway through the fourth quarter after sustaining what was eventually revealed to be a “mild high ankle sprain.”
“I’m going to make sure [he’s OK],” expressed Reid. “We’ve been taking it day by day, and that’s kind of where we’re at. But he did look good out there... he moved around pretty good. You’re always looking to make sure that [he] can get out of the way, not to further any harm to him. So that’s what I look at.”
Reid also noted that backup Carson Wentz got some extra practice time this week, but not necessarily with the first-team offense.
Kansas City is also likely to activate wide receiver Hollywood Brown for the game, putting him in line to make his season debut after suffering a preseason shoulder injury.
“He’s done a nice job,” said Reid of Brown. “It wasn’t his legs, so he’s been able to run, keep himself in running shape — but the rest of it, where the surgery and that, it looked good and was doing fine.”
Safety Chamarri Conner (concussion) and offensive lineman D.J. Humphries (hamstring) won’t play against Houston.
