This isn’t the way that things were supposed to go for the Indianapolis Colts and their fans.

Instead of watching Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones fail miserably at trying to be NFL starting quarterbacks, Colts fans were supposed to be watching Andrew Luck lead the team to its third Super Bowl in the last five years.

Luck was the chosen one post-Peyton Manning. The top pick in the 2012 NFL Draft made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons in the league and threw for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns en route to being named the league’s Comeback Player of the Year.

And then he just left…

Andrew Luck Planned To Play NFL Football Well Into His 40s

Prior to the 2019 season, Luck shocked the world by announcing his retirement from football. Years later, Luck opened up about how nearly constant pain left him with no other choice.

But what about a world where Luck didn’t deal with chronic pain? What would that look like for Luck? How about for the Colts and their fans?

He spoke with Zak Keefer of The Athletic about just that recently, and it’s a hard pill to swallow for Indianapolis fans.

“I was gonna play until I was 40 or 45,” Luck told Keefer. “You think you’re invincible. At least I did.”

While many Colts fans believed they’d moved on from Luck, seven years after his retirement, the new story dug up old scars. Luck carries that weight with him, although more so for his teammates than for fans.

“I’ll always have guilt about how it ended,” Luck says. “I let my teammates down.”

Ultimately, if Luck didn’t walk away, his body probably would have left him with no choice well before he got to the age of 40. But his early retirement is one of, if not the biggest, “what if” in Indianapolis sports history.
