Many athletes opt to rock a jersey number that means something to them, and Amon-Ra St. Brown attempted to do that after he made the leap to the NFL. However, it turns out the wide receiver only settled on the one he wears because his girlfriend screwed up some pretty basic math.

There’s not a ton of room for personalization if you’re a pro athlete who plays a sport that requires you to wear a uniform (as that name would suggest), but there are many players who take a fairly deliberate approach to picking the number that’s emblazoned on it.

Those digits frequently have a deeper meaning for the person who’s wearing them, whether it’s a tribute to an idol who inspired them, a reference to a date with some particular significance, or simply a nod to the one they wore growing up as a reminder of how far they’ve come.

There have also been some players who’ve decided to use their jersey number as motivation.

Former Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II decided to wear No. 31 for the Dolphins as a nod to the other teams that passed on him in the 2025 NFL Draft, and Quinn Ewers will rock No. 14 for the same squad because he was the 14th (and final) quarterback selected.

Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown apparently intended to go a similar route as the former Texas QB, as the man who sported No. 8 in college switched to No. 14 after Detroit got him in the fourth round with the 112th overall pick in 2021.

That was intended to be a nod to the number of wide receivers who were drafted before him. However, his girlfriend, Brooklyn Adams, revealed he would have gone with No. 16 if she’d been able to count correctly in an episode of the second season of Netflix’s Quarterback documentary series

Amon-Ra reveals on Netflix’s Quarterback Season 2 why he chose to wear No. 14.

Brooklyn told him there were 14 receivers drafted before him, so they both agreed it made sense for No. 14 to be his number since it was available.

Brown may have picked the wrong jersey number, but things have still work out pretty well for him; 36 wide receivers were ultimately selected that year, and he’s currently just one of three who’ve been named to the Pro Bowl since entering the league (Ja’Marr Chase and Nico Collins round out the trio).
