After a hamstring injury to replacement kicker Spencer Shrader, the Chiefs brought Matthew Wright back to the practice squad.
The Kansas City Chiefs just cannot shake the injury bug.
On Tuesday, the club announced that kicker Spencer Shrader (hamstring) and linebacker Cam Jones (illness) would both miss Tuesday’s practice. The injury to Shrader was severe enough that the Chiefs brought journeyman kicker Matthew Wright back into the fold on their practice squad.
Wright, 28, first entered the league as a 2019 undrafted free agent out of UCF with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since then, Wright has made stops with eight NFL clubs, including two in Kansas City. Appearing for the Chiefs in Weeks 4 of 5 of 2022, Wright converted 2 of 3 field goal attempts, including a 59-yarder (which, for a week, held as the franchise record). He was a perfect 8 of 8 on extra points.
In 2024, Wright has appeared in only one game: Week 6 for the San Francisco 49ers. In their 36-34 win over the Seattle Seahawks, he was perfect, making all three field goals and all three extra points. If Shrader cannot play on Friday against the Las Vegas Raiders, Wright should be expected to make the start.
In addition to Shrader’s injury, the Chiefs placed tight end Peyton Hendershot on their Reserve/Injured list due to a calf injury. Over the last three games, Hendershot has played around 50% of the club’s special-teams snaps. He also added a reception in each game.
To potentially replace Hendershot (who replaced rookie Jared Wiley earlier this season), the Chiefs restored tight end Baylor Cupp to their practice squad from their practice squad injured list. The 24-year-old joined the club for training camp as a 2024 undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech.
Kansas City also confirmed the signing of offensive tackle DJ Humphries, who was wearing No. 70 during the portion of Friday practice available to the media.
To make room for all the additions, Kansas City waived defensive end Cam Thomas, who had been acquired from the Arizona Cardinals for a seventh-round pick. They also terminated the contracts of defensive end Truman Jones and offensive lineman Lucas Niang, who was a 2020 third-round NFL Draft selection.
