Heading into the offseason, wide receiver was a popular point of emphasis when discussing the Washington Commanders‘ needs. Deebo Samuel was set for free agency, and though the Pro Bowl wideout still hasn’t signed elsewhere, his departure leaves a sizable hole on the depth chart.
The Commanders hope third-round rookie Antonio Williams can help replace Samuel’s production. Yet, expecting a first-year player who’s still adjusting to the size, speed, and strength of the NFL to come close to the 727 yards and five touchdowns Samuel produced is asking a lot. Of course, Terry McLaurin’s return from injury will help, as he’s expected to lead the team in receiving after Samuel did so last season. But still, there’s a sense the Commanders could use some more help at the pass-catcher position.
Right now, the Commanders are projected to start McLaurin, but who joins him in the first-team offense will have to be settled during training camp. Yet, former first-round pick Treylon Burns and the rookie, Williams, are the favorites. Free agent signee Dyami Brown, Luke McCaffrey, and 2025 fourth-round pick Jaylin Lane could factor in too.
Still, that crop of competition might be enough if the Commanders are looking to return to the playoffs this season. But would adding someone like Stefon Diggs be the cure to Washington’s ills?
According to ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Commanders are an “intriguing” landing spot in Diggs’ mind.

Diggs may be exactly what the Commanders need. Someone who can help raise the floor of this passing offense while imparting his wisdom on younger receivers. They may only need Diggs for a season before one of their younger receivers develops into a capable security blanket for Daniels.
But for this year, Diggs can help take attention away from McLaurin and make life easier on the other playmakers within Washington’s passing offense. It feels like the perfect fit.
