After general manager Adam Peters spent the offseason reshaping the roster, the Washington Commanders hope they’ve built a team that’s ready to compete for a playoff spot again. After all, it was just two years ago when the Commanders won 12 games in the regular season and two more in the playoffs to reach the NFC Conference Championship. Now they’re trying to return to making deep postseason runs again.
But do they have everything they need? Has the offense found enough playmakers to help ensure Jayden Daniels can return to his elite form? Does Dan Quinn’s defense finally have enough pieces to make opponents feel their presence? More work may need to be one, and there’s one former All-Pro who says he’s Washington’s “missing piece.”

One area that’s drawn a lot of criticism in D.C. is the Commanders’ wide receiving corps. Terry McLaurin was limited to just 10 games last season, which led to Deebo Samuel being the team’s leading receiver. He’s now a free agent.
The Commanders must find someone else Daniels can rely on. While there are a host of candidates, the receiver room is still filled with question marks.
Meanwhile, one person who swears he can help is Brandon Aiyuk, who is currently under contract with the San Francisco 49ers, but the team has placed him on the ‘left team list’ because he stopped reporting for rehab sessions on his surgically repaired knee after tearing his ACL.
Recently, Aiyuk told The Athletic‘s Matt Barrows and Nicki Jhabvala that he’s the Commanders’ “missing piece.” Yet, he’s been trying to get the Commanders’ attention all offseason long, and it hasn’t seemed to help generate any interest in the former Second-Team All-Pro receiver.
However, as noted, The Athletic was able to reach Aiyuk by text. He replied with the following message.
While the 28-year-old Aiyuk may indeed still have something to offer the NFL, when or if he’ll get that opportunity remains to be seen. He didn’t play a single snap last season while recovering from knee surgery, and he only made it through seven games in 2024. In other words, it’s been a long time since Aiyuk was at his peak.
He’s also likely turned some potential suitors away by his seemingly non-stop posts on social media, either attacking his current employer or trying to get the attention of the Commanders. Yet, his status hasn’t changed in San Francisco. They’re not willing to release him, and no team will trade for the remainder of his four-year, $120 million contract, in which he’s only in Year 2 of.
