Alex Freeman, 21, had only scored in two previous games for the U.S. National team before Friday’s World Cup match against Australia. The son of Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer Antonio Freeman was able to punch in a header to give the Americans a 2-0 lead in the first half.
The goal was initially called offside by the refs on the field, but with the assistance of VAR, it was overturned as Freeman had not completely crossed the back leg of the last Australian defender when the ball was put in the air.
If the United States finishes this game with a win, it will clinch an opportunity in the knockout round. Depending on the results of other games in the second week of the group stage, America can clinch the top seed in its four-team group before the final week of the group stage.
The US’ next game will be on June 25th against Turkey.
