The San Francisco 49ers were devastated to learn that Aldon Smith passed away at the age of 36. The former 49ers linebacker made quite an impact on San Francisco during his four season with the team. One of Smith’s friends spoke about the final day of his friend’s life in a recent interview.
Smith’s friend, Amir Shirazi, revealed that his final day was spent delivering pizza to a homeless charity. According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, that was confirmed by both Shirazi and the charity’s founder.
Both Smith and Shirazi returned to Shirazi’s house after making the delivery. Shirazi stepped inside for a moment and he found Smith slump over in his truck when he returned. He does not know Smith’s cause of death, but believes it was from natural causes.
“He was perfectly fine an hour before,” Shirazi said, per Matthias Gafni and Noah Furtado of The San Francisco Chronicle. “I came out and he was basically dead in my front seat. I’m just in shock.”
Several people who knew Smith well, including NFL reporter Jay Glazer, praised Smith as an excellent person who cared about others.
“He was a very sweet, caring, loving giant,” Shirazi added. “That if you really knew him, you’d know who he truly is.”
San Francisco posted a loving tribute to Smith to announce the news about his passing.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith. Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon,” the statement read.
