As the Chicago Bears prepare for the 2026 NFL season, following an unexpected playoff run to the divisional round led by quarterback Caleb Williams and coordinator Ben Johnson, Williams is navigating a new wave of offseason scrutiny. After being named the cover athlete for Madden, he faced significant backlash from online critics. In response to how he handles this intense scrutiny, Williams bluntly stated via Barstool Sports on X that any athlete who claims to be completely unaware of outside criticism is a “liar.”
While Williams works to filter out these external voices, his coaching staff is focused on improving his on-field performance. In a piece for Sports Illustrated, NFL insider Albert Breer made an intriguing bet regarding Williams’ development.
He referenced a notable spring quote from Bears quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett, who emphasized that his main goal this offseason is to show Williams that “we don’t have to work as hard for our money.” This marks a significant change from the previous summer, when Ben Johnson, Declan Doyle, and Barrett overwhelmed the rookie with complex information to help him improve.
Now that Williams has a solid foundation, Breer predicts that the Bears will prioritize simpler, structural plays this summer, teaching the quarterback that he doesn’t always have to pursue the spectacular to win.
In addition to refining his playing style, Williams is facing challenges off the field as his branding hits a temporary setback. According to ESPN, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) initially denied Williams’ attempt to trademark his “Iceman” nickname.
The USPTO cited a “likelihood of confusion” with an existing trademark held by LaCrosse Footwear for its line of insulated boots, pointing to similarities that could overlap with Williams’ proposed apparel and merchandise lines. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben noted that while over 60% of applications encounter initial rejections, Williams has a strong case if he chooses to appeal.
