Last year, Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald introduced the weekly captain system. This was a departure from the season long captains under Pete Carroll. This week, tight end AJ Barner, as well as linebackers Ernest Jones IV and Chazz Surratt have been named game captains for the Week 6 game at the Jacksonville Jaguars. This is the second time Barner and Jones have been named game captains this season.
Barner continues his successful sophomore campaign after catching two touchdowns last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On the season, Barner has 14 receptions for 134 yards and four touchdowns. These four touchdowns tie Barner with Dallas Goedert of the Philadelphia Eagles for the most receiving touchdowns by a tight end entering this week.
This game in Jacksonville will be a pseudo-homecoming for Jones. Jones grew up in Waycross, Georgia, less than a two-hour drive northwest of Jacksonville. Jones’ status as a game captain is also good news for his injury status. Jones, who has yet to fully participate this week, now looks ready to go for Sunday. He will be looking to help lead the Seahawks defense in proving that last week’s defensive meltdown against the Buccaneers was an anomaly.
Surratt, who joined the Seahawks at the conclusion of this past training camp, has played mostly on special teams. He has posted five tackles in the five games he has played this season.
