The Las Vegas Raiders have decided to go with three quarterbacks on their active roster.

On the day his 21-day window from being elevated from the injured reserve was to expire, the Raiders activated Aidan O’Connell. He will take the place of safety Chris Smith on the 53-man roster. Smith was waived Tuesday. O’Connell was a fourth-round draft pick n 2023 and Smith was a fifth-round pick the same year.

O’Connell now joins starting quarterback Geno Smith and fellow reserve Kenny Pickett on the 53-man roster. Cam Miller, a sixth-round pick, is on the practice squad.

O’Connell broke his wrist in the preseason finale on Aug. 23. He was originally expected to be sidelined for six-eight weeks. He has been practicing for the past three weeks. Tuesday, Las Vegas coach Pete Carroll said the team had O’Connell practicing against the Raiders’ first-team defense to speed up his ramping-up period.

The Raiders sent a fifth-round draft pick to the Cleveland Browns for Pickett two days after O’Connell’s injury. It will be interesting to see if O’Connell can surpass Pickett as Smith’s backup down the stretch.
